The Teaching Journey (or patchwork) with Emily Goodwin and Dr Jo Montgomery
Show Notes

In this episode Toria talks with Emily, founder of Virtual School Visits and Jo from Dr Jo Science Solutions. They share how their careers have evolved from classroom teaching to starting an edtech business and becoming a primary science specialist respectively. We hear the important message that teaching doesn't have to be a linear route to leadership and that having a 'patchwork' approach to your career in education could be the way forward.

Emily Goodwin (@vsvemily) founded Virtual School Visits (@curriculumwow) in 2020. As the UK went into lockdown and school trips and visitors were off the cards, Emily noticed an increasing appetite for virtual alternatives. Plus, regardless of Covid, utilising video conferencing more in the classroom seemed like a no-brainer. Other teachers agreed and so Virtual School Visits was born. Emily set to work building the website, recruiting speakers and advertising to schools (all whilst continuing to teach full time - yes, she was very tired!). Fast forward to 2022 and Emily has left teaching to focus on Virtual School Visits full time and connect classrooms in the UK and worldwide with inspiring authors, scientists, athletes and historical characters.

Jo Montgomery (@DrJoScience) is a chartered science teacher (CSciTeach), trainer and scientist with a patchwork career spanning more than 20 years in education. As a primary science specialist at Dr Jo Science Solutions, Jo teaches children and supports teacher professional development with a number of organisations, including as a Primary Science Quality Mark (www.PSQM.org) hub leader, STEM Learning Lead facilitator (www.stem.org.uk) with Cambridge & Peterborough, Norfolk & Suffolk and Herts & Essex Science Learning Partnerships, Great Science Share for Schools regional champion (www.greatscienceshare.org) and independent consultant.
